McArthur: Selling Green Investment Bank is environmentally irresponsible

Scottish Liberal Democrat energy spokesperson Liam McArthur MSP has today accused the UK government of being "environmentally irresponsible" after the controversial sale of the Green Investment Bank to an Australian bank in a cut price deal.

The Green Investment Bank, set up by the UK government five years ago to invest in renewable and low carbon projects, has been sold to Macquarie Bank for £2.3bn.

Mr McArthur said:

"Since 2015 the Conservatives have scrapped the zero carbon homes scheme, abolished the Department of the Environment and Climate Change and now want to let their friends cash in on the Green Investment Bank.

"The Green Investment Bank should be an opportunity for the UK to lead by example in building a more sustainable future. On that basis, this sale is environmentally irresponsible, and on the eve of an election politically dubious."
