Attempts to return to prison show need for throughcare extension

Responding to the publication of a report on HMP Kilmarnock by Her Majesty's Chief Inspector of Prisons (HMIPS), Scottish Liberal Democrat justice spokesperson Liam McArthur MSP commented:

"It is appalling to hear of people actively trying to return to prison because they lacked the most basic support after being released. People shouldn't ever have to shoplift because they believe prison is their best chance of finding somewhere to sleep and food to eat.

"Scottish Liberal Democrats have consistently argued that we need to extend throughcare to all prisoners, not just those serving sentences of more than four years, to give all offenders a clear right to support when they leave prison.

"Support must start in prison and continue seemlessly after release, ensuring nobody is left at the prison gate with nowhere to go. That is the best way to reduce reoffending, protect communities and give people the chance they deserve to get on in life."
