Responding to new official statistics showing low income households, especially families with children, are falling further behind those on middle incomes, Scottish Liberal Democrat social security spokesperson Caron Lindsay commented:

"It is intolerable that a million people in Scotland, including one in four children, are living in relative poverty.

"The best route out of poverty is well paid work and the best route into work is education. Good mental health also liberates people and helps them achieve their potential.

"Time after time the SNP have turned down the chance to transform our education system, which we know has slipped, or deliver the step change that is so desperately need in mental health.

"Investing in education and mental health is the best way to build a sustainable, vibrant economy that deploys the talents of all our people."
