Lib Dems select former BBC journalist John Knox to fight by-election5.13.59pm BST (GMT +0100) Tue 13th Jul 2010
Edinburgh South Liberal Democrats have selected John Knox to be their candidate in the forthcoming Liberton/ Gilmerton Ward by-election. "I want to get more involved in the local community at the grass roots. I believe in the current economic climate it's important to protect public services for the most vulnerable in society. This is why I have decided to put myself forward for election. "As a journalist for many years I have observed local politics I have gained insight which I believe I can put to good use and be an effective local champion." John Knox recently retired from the BBC after 27 years during which time he spent 10 years as a radio reporter at the Scottish Parliament. John has lived in The Inch for the past 7 years and is an active member of the Craigmillar Wood Action Group. John is a keen hill walker and his other hobbies include music and writing. Local Liberal Democrat Councillor Conor Snowden said, "The Lib Dem-led Council has really been delivering for Liberton/Gilmerton in the last 3 years with funding to deliver a new care home, a new nursery school and a new library facility. John would make an excellent addition to the Lib Dem team at the City Chambers and join me in standing up for our neighbours in Liberton/Gilmerton.
