Many thanks to all who voted Liberal Democrat - Fred Mackintosh

"It is hard not to be disappointed by election result in Edinburgh South" said Liberal Democrat candidate Fred Mackintosh after returning home from the election count at Meadowbank in the early hours of Friday 7 May.
Despite increasing the Lib Dem vote by 1.7% (a greater increase than the Labour vote) Fred Mackintosh and the Liberal Democrats failed to overturn the previous Labour majority of 405 votes. The new Labour majority is 316 votes meaning Edinburgh South remains one of the most marginal seats in Britain.
Fred Mackintosh continued, "I want to thank all 14,899 people who voted for me on Thursday. I am so sorry that we were unable to convince just a few hundred more people to vote of the Liberal Democrat vision of fairness and reform. I feel certain that the last few days of the election campaign Labour frightened people into coming out to stop the Tories in a seat where the Tories ultimately slumped even further back in third place. The UK general election has turned into a triumph of fear over hope and that is a terrible shame."
"Edinburgh South is a great place to live and I know that the Liberal Democrat team here led by local MSP Mike Pringle will continue to fight for our community whatever the new parliament throws up."
