Action on Buckstone Cushions

4.30.00pm GMT Tue 9th Feb 2010

Local residents in Buckstone have welcomed the decision of the Council's Transport Environment and Infrastructure Committee to replace the existing speed cushions in Buckstone Road and Buckstone Loan with full width road humps in the next financial year 2010/11. The project will cost £30,000.

Over the winter of 2004/5 the previous Labour administration installed speed cushions on most streets in the Buckstone Estate. The cushions have not been popular with drivers as the design (to help ambulance drivers maintain access) forces drivers into the middle of the road.

After a long campaign by residents, councillors and the community council the council is to provide a route on Buckstone Road and Loan through the estate where cushions can be avoided. The installation of full width speed bumps on these two streets will also reduce the speed of wider vehicles such as delivery vans and lorries.

Liberal Democrat campaigner Fred Mackintosh, "I have spoken to hundreds of residents of Buckstone in recent year and these cushions have not been popular. Local people need to use their cars as Buckstone is a long way from shops and public services I hope this change will make driving to and from their homes less bumpy for the people of Buckstone."

Commenting on the decision City Transport Convenor Councillor Gordon Mackenzie said, "179 residents supported this change and 22 opposed it. I am pleased that the Liberal Democrat led council has been able to make a difference to the people of Buckstone."
