SNP BUDGET CONCESSIONS NOT GOOD ENOUGH - PRINGLE

6.00.00pm GMT Wed 20th Jan 2010

Commenting after the Stage One vote on the Scottish Government's Budget, Liberal Democrat MSP for Edinburgh South Mike Pringle said said:

"John Swinney had an opportunity today to show that he was serious about securing wider support for his budget. He didn't go far enough to get our vote today. We will continue discussions with the Government.

"It is encouraging that the Government are moving towards our proposals for a reduction in the £650 million pay bill for the top 1 per cent of the highest paid employees in the public sector, but disappointing that there was no indication of subsequent savings being spent on supporting young people, protecting Post Offices and industry and manufacturing jobs.

"Our practical and deliverable measures include specific support for the textiles industry, keeping Post Offices open and preventing another lost generation of young people."
