Local Housing Allowance claw back bad news for South Edinburgh residents10.11.00am BST (GMT +0100) Mon 31st Aug 2009 Local Liberal Democrat Westminster Spokesperson Fred Mackintosh has attacked Government proposals to claw back the £15 a week that Local Housing Allowance claimants can keep if they can find a private tenancy for less than the allowance they are paid. "This policy not only hits the poorest in our society it also will do nothing to encourage tenants to negotiate cheaper rents" said Fred Mackintosh "It combines unfairness, mean spiritedness with a small minded bureaucratic incompetence that we have come to expect from this Labour Government." The Local Housing Allowance for a couple with two children under 10 in Edinburgh is up to £150 per week. The loss of the £15 bonus for finding a cheaper flat could mean the loss of up to 10% of a family's income if such a family are on income support.
