Labour's ID Card Scheme alive and well - Mackintosh10.00.00pm BST (GMT +0100) Mon 20th Jul 2009
On 8 July 2009 Edinburgh South Labour MP Nigel Griffiths voted with the Government to approve a Statutory Instrument called The Identity Cards Act 2006 (Provision of Information without Consent) Regulations 2009. This regulation - opposed by Liberal Democrat MPs - gives the Identity and Passport Service the power to pass on information it holds on holders of ID Cards and Passports to a host of other Government agencies without consent. Edinburgh South Lib Dem Westminster Spokesperson Fred Mackintosh comment, "The information that can now be passed on now includes every time you have had your ID checked and that could be when you register with a GP, open a bank account, apply for credit, collect a parcel, buy or use airline tickets or travel abroad. It nothing to be private?" The Liberal Democrat have long opposed Labour's identity card plans and national identity database. Identity cards and the register are a technological solution in search of a problem. Fred Mackintosh continued, "Just because we can monitor and record the activities and movements of the people of this country it doesn't mean that we should. What happened to the idea that the police and government agencies required reasonable suspicion before searching people and collecting their personal and private data?"
