Local Lib Dems Salute Armed Forces Day9.07.00am BST (GMT +0100) Sat 27th Jun 2009 Mike Pringle MSP, Liberal Democrat MSP for Edinburgh South and Fred Mackintosh, Liberal Democrat Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Edinburgh South have paid tribute to the men and woman who serve in Britain's armed forces at the end of a week celebrating the role they play in preserving a free and safe society. Armed Forces Day on Saturday 27th June marks the culmination of events held across the United Kingdom to honour Britain's armed forces, past, present and future. Commenting, Mike Pringle said: "The bravery of the men and woman who serve in Britain's armed forces is never far from our minds with active operations continuing in Afghanistan. Peacekeeping and humanitarian missions give our servicemen and women a global presence. In many ways they are Britain's face to the world. It is important that we take the time to show how proud we are of the dangerous and challenging job they do. Armed Forces Day is an opportunity to do just that and I am delighted to be able to support them today." Fred Mackintosh continued, "The Government continues to fail our armed forces. The equipment supplied to British troops remains inadequate and support for veterans and families is just not good enough . We need a proper strategic defence review to match our forces to the important tasks we want them to undertake. The way we treat our service personnel must be at the heart of this review."
