City Council Objects to Post Office Closures - without Labour support

12.00.00am GMT Thu 18th Sep 2008

At the full council meeting on Thursday 18 September 2008 the City of Edinburgh Council approved a formal objection to the proposals to close 14 Edinburgh Post Offices. Labour councillors refused to support the council objection.

A motion in the name of Liberal Democrat Councillor Conor Snowden was supported by all the Liberal Democrat, SNP, Conservative and Green councillors whilst Labour councillors refused to approve the submission of a council objection and called for the council to merely 'note' the draft objection prepared by Council officers.

As a result of the decision the Council added to its objection detailed demographic information on the growing number of student and multiple occupation properties in the area around Warrender Park Road as requested by Marchmont and Sciennes Community Council.
