Fred Mackintosh - "It is time to leave Iraq"

Speaking to members of Edinburgh South Liberal Democrats local Liberal Democrat Spokesperson Fred Mackintosh said, "It is time to recognise that British troops can do no more in Iraq. Their professionalism and dedication has been outstanding and their courage has been fantastic, but it is time to leave."

"As the Royal Scots Borders - 1st Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland arrive in Basra it is notable that Labour has failed to answer the fundamental questions about the military purpose their deployment will serve and the political objective they are achieving by their continued presence.

"The level of casualties is unacceptable. We have a moral obligation to the young men and women of our armed forces. We should now set a framework for their withdrawal from Iraq."
