11.00.00pm BST (GMT +0100) Tue 22nd May 2007

Edinburgh South MSP Mike Pringle has welcomed the two-week pilot scheme to encourage shoppers to bring their own shopping bags launched by Waitrose.

In the last parliament Mike Pringle who introduced a bill to bring in a levy on plastic bags has tabled a motion in the Scottish Parliament congratulating Waitrose and encouraging all supermarkets to take even bolder steps to reduce packaging and waste.

Waitrose, who operate a store Morningside, has a "green tills" initiative, which allows shoppers who do not use a plastic carrier bag to go through the checkouts more quickly.
